In 1909, much to the disapproval of her parents, Stanwyck marries German-American professor Kruger. They live happily until the outbreak of WW I, when Kruger joins the Army but is really a spy for the Germans. Stanwyck is torn between her love for him and her patriotism, with patriotism
winning out as she poisons him before he can send his information to Berlin. Stanwyck then poisons herself, ending the film on a distressingly downbeat note. Stanwyck pulls out all the stops in this one and looks thoroughly distressed by her predicament.
