In his 1984 film STRANGERS KISS, director Matthew Chapman paid tribute to Stanley Kubrick by casting Peter Coyote as a coolly manipulative director making a low-budget film patterned after Kubrick's own ultra-cheap debut, KILLER'S KISS. Filmed in 1987, HEART OF MIDNIGHT reunites Chapman, Coyote, and the spirit of Kubrick, this time in an atmospheric homage to Kubrick's Stephen King adaptation THE SHINING. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Carol Rivers, who, while recovering from a nervous breakdown, reopens the rundown Charleston, South Carolina, nightclub she has inherited from her uncle. Moving into an apartment over the club, Carol is soon afflicted with bizarre hallucinations as the Midnight Club--like THE SHINING's Overlook Hotel--seems to have a ghastly life of its own. When Carol is raped, a strange police lieutenant (Coyote) enters her life, and things just keep getting weirder. Regrettably, in providing a catalog of lurid explanations for the odd behavior of the characters, writer-director Chapman winds up raising more questions than he answers. More important, he loses track of his main character, whose interior struggle to regain her sanity gets lost in cumbersome plot mechanics. Still, Chapman periodically displays a mastery of Kubrickian film language, using a combination of soundtrack manipulation, eerie camerawork, and flashy cutting--as well Leigh's fine performance--to suggest how the club transforms Carol. leave a comment
