Heart Beat: Review

Silly buddy picture allegedly based on the three-way relationship between Beat writers Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and Cassady's wife (from whose book the film takes its title, if not much more). Nolte (as Cassady) and Heard (as Kerouac) wander through the post-WW II American landscape before Nolte settles in San Francisco and marries Spacek. Heard drifts in and out of the couple's life for a number of years after that, occasionally sleeping with Spacek, until On the Road is published and he becomes a celebrity and pop icon. From there his rapid decline is slightly illustrated but not at all explained, until his death two years after Nolte's. The actors try, but the script is one of the worst ever foisted on a talented group of players, filled with banal lines and pseudosignificant moments. For those unfamiliar with Kerouac and Cassady, the film does nothing to explain their impact on American culture and comes off as little more than a watered-down version of JULES AND JIM. For those who know and appreciate these two figures, the film will only annoy. leave a comment
