Silly buddy picture allegedly based on the three-way relationship between Beat writers Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and Cassady's wife (from whose book the film takes its title, if not much more). Nolte (as Cassady) and Heard (as Kerouac) wander through the post-WW II American landscape
before Nolte settles in San Francisco and marries Spacek. Heard drifts in and out of the couple's life for a number of years after that, occasionally sleeping with Spacek, until On the Road
is published and he becomes a celebrity and pop icon. From there his rapid decline is slightly illustrated
