De Sica proves that he is as invaluable in front of the camera as he is behind it. In Italy's answer to GOODBYE MR. CHIPS, he portrays a devoted and philosophical teacher at a boys school. Teaching alongside Mercader, he encounters a variety of obstacles including a suspension stemming from his political beliefs. Both De Sica and the children give wonderfully natural portrayals in this idealistic view of humankind. (In Italian; English subtitles.) leave a comment
