HEADIN' FOR BROADWAY is more hopeless nonsense from the man who gave cinema the sap-filled YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE, writer-director-producer Joseph Brooks. This time out, Brooks oversteps his bounds (and talent) to portray the music world of which he supposedly is a veteran. The film stars Rex Smith, an erstwhile teen idol who later starred in "The Pirates of Penzance" on Broadway, as the leader of a group of young hopefuls who are just dying to make it on the Great White Way--it's amazing they even got as far as this movie. The filmmaking is amateurish, showing every sign of emergency-room editing to save what little material there is. Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland these kids aren't. leave a comment
