HATE | LA HAINE
starstarstarstar
A bitter melange of Scorsese, Godard and Spike Lee, HATE tries to bridge the gap between European art film and American pop, and succeeds to a surprising extent. This second feature from young Mathieu Kassovitz (his first was released here in 1994 under the title CAFE AU LAIT) is set in a public housing project outside Paris, where a trio of angry young men -- an Arab (Said Taghmaoui), a Jew (Vincent Cassel) and a black (Hubert Kounde) -- drift, dance, brood, flirt with viol... read more leave a comment

I am starting to love The New ...

Question: I am starting to love The New Adventures of Old Christine with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. To be honest, I was always hoping all the post-Seinfeld shows would fail, only because all the critics hype up their shows. The difference is that this one is actually funny and cute. I have a question, though. Why do they always have her ex-husband showing up, helping himself to stuff and walking in unannounced? That wouldn't happen to families outside of a sitcom. So what is actually supposed to be the premise? I am a little confused. J.L-D is adorable. Answer: You root against the Seinfeld cast's shows because of critical hype? Seems to me we tend to hate (for good reason) most of the shows they've done since. Christine is a notable exception. It's not an important or great comedy, just an agreeably silly and very watchable one. One of the things I like best about the show is her ex, Richard (nicely played by Clark Gregg). One of the key elements of the show's setup is that she and Richar ... read more

Cutting Edge 2 Tails Doug & Kate's Kid

In 1992's The Cutting Edge, Moira Kelly's ice-cold skating queen reluctantly partnered with D. B. Sweeney's fallen hockey star to pursue Olympic gold — but also find love — as a pairs team. Fourteen years later, ABC Family's The Cutting Edge 2: Going for the Gold (premiering Sunday at 7 pm/ET, following an airing of the original) finds Kate and Doug's way-older-than-14-(but-deal-with-it) daughter, Jackie, lamenting her own shattered ice dreams, only to eventually join with Alex, an in-line skater, to seek Winter Games glory. Playing young Ms. Dorsey in this follow-up is Christy Carlson Romano, with whom TVGuide.com traded Qs and As. TVGuide.com: So you're w read more

Battlestar Galactica "Save the...

Battlestar Galactica "Save the attitude for someone who cares," Starbuck says to Kat — right before Kat's cannon explodes. Yeah, and save the "fracking," too, OK? I just want to say once again that I hate the whole "frack" thing. It's a distracting holdover from the original show, and it's not even a necessary one, no matter how many other fans insist on using it. There. Rant over. Just that rant, I mean. You guys know I love this show, and this was yet another great episode: Roslin's memories of Baltar making out with Number Six, the whole Baltar-Number Six drama in the present, Sharon's baby being a hair away from being aborted and then Baltar's discovery that its blood could be used to cure Roslin's cancer, etc. But the best thing about Galactica is that it's always avoided the trap other sci-fi shows fall into: that of so much going on that there's no room for character developmen read more
