As the crops of a French village are harvested by Gabrio, he falls in love with Demazis, who has been raped by a gang of woodsmen. Gabrio soon finds out that she is the property of the lowly Fernandel who wants a donkey, at least, in return for his woman. Based on a novel by Jean Giorno,
this Pagnol film is divided into three sections: Winter, Spring, and Summer. Initially banned by New York state censors, apparently for its treatment of women, the decision was later overturned by the state regents. (In French; English subtitles.)
