As the crops of a French village are harvested by Gabrio, he falls in love with Demazis, who has been raped by a gang of woodsmen. Gabrio soon finds out that she is the property of the lowly Fernandel who wants a donkey, at least, in return for his woman. Based on a novel by Jean Giorno, this Pagnol film is divided into three sections: Winter, Spring, and Summer.
