Tom Harmon, an All-American and Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Michigan, plays himself in this film loosely based on his life. Starting out with newsreel footage of the 1940 season, it follows Harmon as he marries sweetheart Peggy Adams (Anita Louise); gives pro football a try; works as an assistant for his old coach, Pop Branch (Oscar O'Shea); takes a job with another college, where he uses an illegal formation against his mentor's team; and, finally, seeing the light, returns to Branch's coaching staff. Harmon, who is relatively comfortable in front of the camera here, went on to appear in a number of other sports-themed films, including THE SPIRIT OF WEST POINT (1948); TRIPLE THREAT (1948); THE ROSE BOWL STORY (1952); PAT AND MIKE (1952); and THE ALL-AMERICAN (1953). He also had a successful career as a sportscaster and is the father of actor Mark Harmon (STEALING HOME). leave a comment
