Detective Bud McCall (Ted Prior) poses as a Folsom Prison inmate to prevent a convict with syndicate connections from testifying in defense of Vincent (Vincent Barbi), an underworld chieftain. Desperately trying to protect himself, Vincent orders an assistant, Tony Marino (Tony Zarindast), who was saved by McCall in Vietnam, to eliminate the cop. Both inside and outside of the joint, McCall fights for his life, aided by cellmate Eddy Lee (Carter Wong) and, ultimately, by Marino, whose girl friend has been kidnaped by Vincent. The first half of Zarindast's nihilistic martial-arts drama is tautly confined to the volatile world of organized crime, with his gliding camera continually shifting from the characters' relationships to their dangerous surroundings. But the carefully constructed tale comes apart in the second half of HARDCASE AND FIST, when attention shifts to Carter Wong's Eddy Lee and his absurd displays of martial-arts wizardry. leave a comment
