If the letters D.O.A., M.I.A., M.D.C. or J.F.A. hold a special meaning for you, then Canadian director Bruce MacDonald has just made your favorite movie. Based on Michael Turner's pictorial novel about an aging Canadian punk band who hit the road for a fateful reunion tour, MacDonald's mockumentary is a smart and affectionate satire of the days when all a real rock 'n' roll band ever needed were three good initials and a van. Hard Core Logo were once the leading lights of the Vancouver hardcore scene, but the overwhelming pressure to sell out and sign to a major label eventually led to the band's breakup. But hearing that his friend and punk-rock mentor Bucky Haight (Julian Richings) has lost both his legs after a shooting incident, front man Joe Dick (Hugh Dillon) decides to reunite H.C.L. -- first for a "Rock Against Guns" benefit, then for an extended tour across the frozen landscape of western Canada. What follows, of course, is a disaster. Time has only intensified the rivalry between Joe and lead guitarist Billy Tallent (Callum Keith Rennie). Bassist John Oxenberger (John Pyper-Ferguson), who's only just recently recovered from a nervous breakdown, loses his medication shortly into the tour. And drummer Pipefitter (Bernie Coulson) is the quintessential rock 'n' roll animal and the last person with whom you'd ever want to be trapped in a van. Purporting to be a real-life tour film of an honest-to-God rock band, MacDonald's bogus documentary stylishly mixes interviews, concert footage and all the off-stage drama into a surreal, deadpan spoof that's sharp enough to cry "SPINAL TAP" before you can. Best of all, the band isn't half bad, thrashing out vintage tunes by the Dead Boys and Canada's own Diodes as they slog their way back into oblivion. leave a comment --Ken Fox
