Happy End

1966, Movie, NR, 73 mins

A bizarre Czech film wherein all physical and narrative action occurs in reverse motion. The film opens as the severed head of Mensik is returned to his body (he had just been guillotined). He walks back into the prison and soon walks out the front entrance. He discovers a suitcase on the sidewalk and brings it home. There he finds the dismembered pieces of a dead woman, which he reassembles. He falls in love with the woman and takes her to a seaside resort. There he suspects that his woman is flirting with another man, so he takes his rival into the ocean and drowns him. Dissatisfied with his woman, Mensik decides to "unmarry" her despite her protest. A priest conducts the ceremony, but the woman will not leave Mensik alone. He throws the woman into a burning building and goes off to another romance. An interesting experiment--it would probably have been more successful if it were shorter--by a Czech director of comedies best known for his wild West satires. leave a comment
