It Had To Happen

This sometimes-interesting crime comedy-drama features Raft in one of his best roles. He's asked to act in this one, not just flip coins or look tough or dance and, under Del Ruth's direction, he turns in a good performance. Raft and Carrillo are Italian immigrants who come to the US in search of their destinies. Raft gets a job digging ditches and does well. He's taken off digging chores and promoted to the job of waving down the cars to stop them at construction sites. He does this with aplomb and flags down the car of New York's mayor, Stanton, who sees that Raft is not an ordinary lout but a man who has some pride in what he does, no matter how low the task. St...
