Ferrer plays a concert pianist whose hands are ruined in a plane crash. Wolfit, a surgeon famous for his bone-grafting operations, attaches the hands of a condemned murderer to Ferrer. The pianist soon becomes obsessed with his murderer's hands and believes they are capable only of destruction. In Marseilles, he meets Lee, a seedy magician who overhears Ferrer's worries that he may have murdered someone. Lee and his reluctant assistant, Carrel, blackmail Ferrer.
