Despite its routine story line, HALF A SIXPENCE is anything but a routine film. Tommy Steele gives a tour-de-force performance as Arthur Kipps, an apprentice draper who inherits a fortune and goes wild spending it on the high life he's always dreamed of. The stereotypical supporting roles of the wealthy socialites are performed with relish, with Cyril Ritchard particularly good as a slightly eccentric actor-playwright. Julia Foster is also terrific as Arthur's long-suffering sweetheart who puts up with his teeter-tottering between "society ladies" and herself. Nonetheless, the film is Steele's from start to finish. The memorable title song and the punchy "Flash, Bang, Wallop!" are showstoppers. The other musical numbers include: "All in the Cause of Economy," "I'm Not Talking to You" (Steele and Apprentices), "Money to Burn," "The Race Is On" (Steele and Chorus), "I Don't Believe a Word of It" (Foster and Friends), "A Proper Gentleman" (Chorus), "She's Too Far above Me," "This Is My World" (Steele), "If the Rain's Got to Fall" (Steele, Children, and Chorus), "Entr'acte" (Orchestra), and "I Know What I Am" (Foster). leave a comment
