The Broadway and vaudeville comedy team of Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey attack the big screen with lots of heart, portraying two enlisted men who go AWOL in Paris and disguise themselves as officers to elude the MPs. Their colonel is also in Paris, along with his two lovely daughters, one of whom is Dorothy Lee, with whom Wheeler soon becomes romantically entangled. Plenty of comic complications arise as the film builds up to a final battle scene. As usual, the Wheeler-Woolsey team is terrific, carrying the story with their unique brand of slapstick. Lee, who is wonderful opposite Wheeler, went on to play his sweetheart in the four other films made by this comedy team. Max Steiner received his first credit as music director in this film. All in all, HALF SHOT AT SUNRISE is a wonderful, freewheeling affair from a very talented and unfortunately forgotten pair. leave a comment
