A raucous farce that could give blaxploitation comedy a bad name, in which two macho construction workers overcome their biases at beauty school. Swishy cosmetologist Tiny Stevens (Que Stevenson) reigns supreme at Hair-Tech Academy; his annual triumph in the local beauty competition helps him deal with the rejection of his homophobic family. Maybe that's why Tiny takes a protective interest in the love life of his roommate, Aqua Rozell (Monica Askew); she's like a sister to him, and he doesn't appreciate the wolf-whistling-attentions paid to her by blue collar blowhards Dave Stenson (Jason Smith) and Wayne McFadden (Eric Conners). The real trouble begins when Dave and Wayne need to use High-Tech's restroom and Tiny gets too friendly at the urinal. The macho men overreact and earn themselves 1200 hours of public service at the beauty academy. In addition to enduring Tiny's effeminacy, Dave must watch his boss, Roger (Jeff Jefferson), score with the foxy Aqua. But Dave and Wayne eventually realize that beauty school is an oasis stocked with hootchie mamas and short on manly men. Dave and Wayne modify their boorish behavior and get in touch with the sensitive sides women love — Dave even allows Aqua to think that he's developed a crush on Tiny! As the yearly Sheen-Way contest approaches, Tiny must teach the boys about all kinds of makeovers, even feigning illness to force his butch protegees to duel with their afro-combs at the competition, rather than brawling with their fists. Tiny also hopes to stop Aqua from wedding the two-timing Roger. Is Dave man enough to follow Tiny's lead and stop the nuptials? The film version of smirking stage hit "NORMAN, IS THAT YOU?" was a model of subtlety compared with this coarse comedy, and gay stereotypes abound despite the movie's message of tolerance. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
