Gypsy: Review

Bouchier is a young gypsy girl engaged to a circus lion tamer. He leaves Hungary for England and marriage to another. Not knowing of the lion tamer's new engagement, Bouchier follows him. When she finds his bookings have been changed and that she has missed him, Bouchier faints. She is picked up by Young, to whom she tells her story. He tries to locate the lion tamer, but Bouchier learns her former love has been killed. Bouchier and Young marry, but then she discovers her lion tamer is not dead. Feeling bound by duty, she goes to him, but finds that he, too, is married, so she returns to Young. This all sounds like fluff, but it works, thanks to the skill of the performers. Bouchier is fine as the gypsy girl, with an accent so convincing it's hard to believe she's British. Young is clever in his role, and Burtwell, as Young's very proper butler, is terrific without being the least bit of a cartoon. Some tight cutting interferes a little with the dialog, but overall it's not a bad film. leave a comment
