About to enter into a marriage he wants no part of, rich nobleman Mitchell takes up with gypsy Mercouri. They marry, but she soon discovers he is no rich man; in fact, he is deeply in debt. Mercouri doesn't care for this at all and lets him have it. She gives a marvelous performance,
lively and extremely sexy. It's a good thing because the dialog is pretty lame. Laverick is Mitchell's sister, long suffering for her brother's philandering ways. The color and photography are magnificent, as are the costumes. Losey goes for emotional values with his direction, a wise choice
considering the weaknesses in the script and the emotional power of Mercouri.
