Mean-spirited and ugly, GUYANA, CULT OF THE DAMNED is a mostly boring depiction of the real-life 1978 tragedy in Jonestown, with Stuart Whitman taking on the role of the charismatic Rev. Johnson (Jim Jones in everything but name), who leads his followers into the Guyana jungle. When his
cult is investigated by a US Congressman (Gene Barry), he commands his followers to drink cyanide-laced Kool-Aid. The names have been changed slightly, presumably to avoid lawsuits, but this sleazy effort offers no insight into the real horrors of the Jonestown tragedy, which was much more
intelligently treated in the made-for-TV production "Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones."
