Quinn is really the only reason to see this otherwise slow-moving film. He's a rebel on the run in 1746 Mexico taken in by Jaffe, a Franciscan priest. When Jaffe is banished to the hinterlands for giving this illegal sanctuary, Quinn disguises himself as a monk and goes with him. They come upon a seemingly empty village, but Jaffe is killed by a sniper. Bronson, a local half-breed, mistakes Quinn for a real priest. He tells Quinn that the villagers have been driven from the town by the Yaqui Indians and will continue to be tormented until they give up their faith. But the village leaders refuse and make a reluctant Quinn the new town padre. He supervises the building of a dam. The Indians attempt to sabotage the project, but Quinn has acquired guns through a former mistress, now the governor's wife. The townsfolk fight off the Indians, killing Bronson and the chief. A passing army troop recognizes Quinn and orders his arrest, but he escapes, accompanied by Comer, who has known the truth of Quinn's identity since his arrival. Similar to THE SEVEN SAMURAI or THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN in its plot involving the good outlaw defending a village, GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN is nowhere near the caliber of these two predecessors. leave a comment
