Attenborough is excellent as a stalwart British soldier stationed in colonial Africa. When the country is declared independent, he and his troops must maintain order. Trouble arrives in the form of John, an African officer who leads a group that opposes the British-approved government. The
military and political mismatch theme works nicely, and the cast is uniformly excellent. Farrow made her screen debut as the film's love interest.
