"Makin Taken" was an important newspaper headline in August 1942, signifying the recapture of an essential Pacific island by a hardened group of Marines under the command of Col. Evans Carlson, renamed Col. Thorwald and played by Randolph Scott in this wartime Hollywoodization of the event. After undergoing rigorous training, the "Raiders" sail to their destination, then take the island over fierce and fanatical resistance. The action-filled final sequences of GUNG HO! are exceptional, though brisk, bloody, and not for the squeamish. Scott is forceful and often inspiring, and the supporting cast is outstanding, with J. Carrol Naish as a tough lieutenant (a role based on Capt. W.S. LeFrancois, who was on the Makin raid and wrote the book on which the film is based), Sam Levene as a wise old sergeant, Walter Sande as another veteran noncom, and Peter Coe, Rod Cameron, Alan Curtis, and Robert Mitchum as stalwart grunts. A minor and somewhat awkwardly presented romance between Grace McDonald and two half-brothers (Noah Beery, Jr., and David Bruce) who both seek her favors provides the only love interest in the early part of the film, which is otherwise dominated by males. The raid itself is spectacularly handled by director Ray Enright, and John P. Fulton's special effects are top notch. leave a comment
