After killing a friend in a duel, fast-gun Scott retires from the shooting business and becomes a cowhand. When another friend is killed by an unscrupulous cattle baron, Scott is forced to pick up his gun once more. To complicate matters, the baron's two daughters serve as dual romantic interests: nice girl Hart, bad girl Britton. The film ends with Scott emerging victorious from a gun battle with Barnett, his hirelings, and a corrupt sheriff. THE GUNFIGHTERS is hampered by a poor editing job and a confusing script. Despite its weaknesses it was successful enough to convince Scott and producer Brown to form their own production company. Joined by director Budd Boetticher later on, they went on to produce several medium-sized westerns that met with some success in the 50s, including THE TALL T and RIDE LONESOME. leave a comment
