A moody, existential western that also serves as an allegory on the fickle nature of fame. Cash is a down-on-his-luck gunfighter stranded in a small town when his snake-bitten horse dies. There he meets Douglas, a gunslinger who earns his wages as a saloon celebrity. They strike up a friendship only to discover that the townspeople are placing bets on who would win a gunfight between the two. Since both need the money, they arrange a showdown with the paid admission to go to the winner. The town is brought to a fevered pitch when Douglas guns down a young cowboy punk out to make a reputation for himself. Finally the big showdown takes place. Cash pulls a fast draw and kills the local favorite. The film ends as Cash prepares to ride off once more. Before he leaves, his eyes meet those of Douglas' widow Alexander, and, in a dream sequence, she imagines what it would be like had the shootout ended with Douglas the winner. Aside from this totally unnecessary ending, A GUNFIGHT is a fine film. The film has the unique distinction of having been financed by the Jicarillia Apache tribe of New Mexico. The Apaches had a good deal of money from gas, oil and uranium deposits on their reservation and were looking for a good investment. The deal was made in a single day to the tune of $2 million. When told that the film had nothing to do with Indians, the Apaches responded that they were only interested in the investment, not the subject matter. leave a comment
