Conte stars in this intriguing prison drama as a New York gambler who gets sent up the river for 20 years on a murder charge. In a Florida prison he soon learns of a "trusty" system under which certain inmates guard others. He works his way into this position and tricks prison
philosopher Jaffe into escaping. During the escape attempt he kills Jaffe and is rewarded with a parole. His plan backfires, however, when Jaffe's diary is read, revealing that Conte set up the escape by pretending to act as Jaffe's partner. Conte is chased down by sheriff McIntire and eventually
shot down. Includes the song "I Cried for You" (Arthur Freed, Gus Arnheim, Abe Lyman).
