Arness, along with partners Wilke and Megowan, stage a robbery but when he's wounded his buddies run out on him, as does girl friend Dickinson. After a year in the pen, he finds his two ex-comrades living in a small border town, but rather than gun down the pair, he plays a waiting game and tries to trap them so they too can have a taste of prison life. They hire Emmet to get rid of Arness, and Dickinson tries to warn her former lover. But Wilke discovers her plan and kills her. In the climactic gun battle Arness gets his revenge by killing Emmet. This is a good little western with an intelligent script that never stoops to cliche or easy outs. Instead characters are well-drawn and the acting is impressive. GUN THE MAN DOWN was the directoral debut of McLaglen, the son of Victor McLaglen. leave a comment
