MacMurray is the eldest of three brothers and caretaker of their late father's ranch. Hunter is the "coward" of the title, a sensitive, non-violent young man who is convinced that he is to blame for his father's death. Rounding out the trio is Stockwell as the wild-living youngest brother. Rule is the woman who switches her affections from MacMurray to Hunter. Hutchinson is the mother whose overbearing manner induces much of Hunter's guilt. The standard gunplay and cattle drives feature here, but what separate GUN FOR A COWARD from other westerns are the characterizations. Here we get to know the people in the film and with few exceptions, even stock characters are well portrayed. MacMurray is fine as the slighted father figure and Hunter gives an intriguing and entirely natural performance. Stockwell does not live up to the other two, however, his performance being more like a bad James Dean impersonation than anything else. Still, the interplay among the three is very good, a quality that helps this film rise above some of its standard cowboy elements. Direction is evenly paced, letting the action and story unfold naturally, ever sensitive to the relationships among characters. leave a comment
