MacMurray is the eldest of three brothers and caretaker of their late father's ranch. Hunter is the "coward" of the title, a sensitive, non-violent young man who is convinced that he is to blame for his father's death. Rounding out the trio is Stockwell as the wild-living youngest
brother. Rule is the woman who switches her affections from MacMurray to Hunter. Hutchinson is the mother whose overbearing manner induces much of Hunter's guilt. The standard gunplay and cattle drives feature here, but what separate GUN FOR A COWARD from other westerns are the characterizations.
