If the sight of Gumby's green, trapezoidal head is your whiff of madeleine, then an army of Blockheads couldn't keep you from this nostalgic exercise in low-tech morphing. But be warned: The world is full of people who just don't get Gumby, and your own children may well be among them, so don't push Old Pointy-Head as an alternative to TOY STORY. The plot is an entirely perfunctory (if inordinately complicated) variation on the evil clone scenario, with Gumby whirling through adventures that range from a STAR WARS parody to a run-in with the Knights of the Round Table. The result is disjointed, like a whole bunch of the old Gumby shorts strung together -- which is simultaneously the film's most conspicuous weakness and its greatest strength. leave a comment
