Barrymore is a highly experienced district attorney who attempts to use his vast courtroom knowledge to pull off a perfect murder. He kills his daughter's lover, Mowbray, and decides to make it look like Francis faked Mowbray's suicide by placing a gun in his hand after killing him.
Barrymore sets up Mowbray's body, puts the gun in his hand, and proceeds to make a brilliant address to an imaginary jury about Francis' guilt. A weird twist ending makes sure that Barrymore pays for his crime, as the stiffening fingers on Mowbray's hand pull the trigger of the gun, firing a
bullet into Barrymore's body.
