GRIZZLY MOUNTAIN
starstarstarstar
It may feature Dan Haggerty -- star of the Sunn Classic "classic" LIFE AND TIMES OF GRIZZLY ADAMS and the spin-off television series -- as a bearded 19th-century mountain man who lives alone in a Pacific Northwest cabin with a bear named Jack. But, as an onscreen disclaimer insists, this cheap-looking and dreadfully dull children's adventure is not a Grizzly Adams feature. If only it were that interesting. While on a family camping trip in the Oregon mountains, young Dylan Marks and his older sister Nicole (Dylan Haggerty, Dan's son, and Nicole Lund) wander into the magic cave of Grizzly Mountain and, with a cut-rate special-effects flourish, find themselves transported back to the year 1870. Kindly woodsman Jeremiah (Haggerty) promises to help the kids get back to their own time, but he's got troubles of his own. An unscrupulous land speculator (Perry Stephens) and his double-dealing girlfriend (Kim Morgan Greene) are conspiring to blow a big hole through Grizzly Mountain in order to make way for the coming railroad. It's up to Jeremiah and the kids to save Grizzly Mountain and all the animals and generic Native Americans (always mentioned in the same breath and always in that order) who call it home. Along the way we're treated to an endless barrage of trite homilies; one long, nonsensical tale from an nearly incoherent Jeremiah; and enough crass product placement to choke a wildcat: Frequent cuts back to the present appear to have no purpose other than plugging Dr. Pepper and Snickers bars. Spare yourself, and the kids as well -- unless, of course, they've been very, very naughty. leave a comment --Ken Fox
