Hogan and Plank are a Bohemian couple living together in the Village. He is an ambitious novelist trying to be the next Jack Kerouac; she is a young ballerina. He promises to marry her if the novel is a success. However, when the book is uniformly panned by the critics, Hogan has a
weekend fling with admiring debutante Seitz. Unbeknownst to Hogan, Plank is already pregnant with his child, and she dies having an abortion. The film ends with Hogan realizing his mistakes and crying in grief.
