The Greene Murder Case

1929, Movie, NR, 68 mins

The second sound film based on S.S. Van Dine's Philo Vance novels (the first, THE CANARY MURDER CASE, was shot silent and then dubbed for sound), is even better than its predecessor. Powell returns as the dashing and suave psychologist/detective, this time to investigate the murder of a New York millionaire. When the nine suspects Powell has rounded up begin to die off as well, the amateur detective must do a bit of digging to discover that sweet and innocent Miss Arthur is actually the cold-blooded killer. Arthur turns in a superb performance as the crafty and very evil murderess whose pleasant, likable demeanor turns horribly rotten when she desperately tries to eliminate Eldridge before Powell can stop her. The production is top-notch in all respects and the climactic chase sequence is quite thrilling. leave a comment
