GREEN MANSIONS will confuse those who haven't read the W.H. Hudson novel and disappoint those who have. Hepburn plays Rima, the bird girl, and Perkins is Abel, the man who finds her in the jungles of Venezuela and falls in love with her. Perkins is in hiding after a political uprising in which his father has been killed. He hears talk of gold in the area as he searches for money to avenge his father's murder. Hepburn, who can communicate with nature, is seen by the Indians as an evil spirit, and the chief's son, Silva, wants to kill her. She is killed when the Indians trap her atop a tall, hollow tree, and set it on fire, but her foster-grandfather, Cobb, leads Perkins to the hidden gold--and maybe, maybe not, Perkins finds Rima alive in a jungle clearing. Hepburn was director Mel Ferrer's wife at the time the movie was produced. leave a comment
