Lana Turner's bid for the sweep of epic skirts, her GWTW as it were, and a classic egg-layer. You can swallow this clinker whole if you can stomach one plot turn: Richard Hart's New Zealand army deserter who gets loaded and writes a love letter to Turner, even though it's little sis Donna Reed he really cares for; the poor lad has the names confused. When Turner blows in, he marries her rather than admit his mistake and all karmic hell breaks loose. Here Saville's direction rises to the fore, with giant trees falling over and the earth belching and shivering in a killer earthquake sequence. Just when things seem tame there's a Maori uprising. Meanwhile, spurned sis Reed takes the nun's vow.

Without murderous acts of passion, Lana's out of her element; but not to worry. Natural disasters and aboriginal riots take no toll on Turner's visage--a strand of hair displaced here, a streak of dirt there. Brunette haircolor and a possible acting chore deter her not one whit from her goal of genus: star. leave a comment
