1942, Movie, NR, 90 mins

Protracted melodrama told mostly in flashback opens at the unveiling of a statue honoring a U.S. senator who amassed great power and apparently did wonderful deeds during the settling of the West. Stanwyck is interviewed by reporters who want to confirm the rumor that she was the late senator's secret wife. After first denying the story, she confides in one writer and spills it all. As it turns out, Stanwyck was the substance behind the senator's (McCrea's) reputation. Anything good that was accomplished resulted from her efforts, and McCrea was really a spineless money grubber. leave a comment
