Barrymore's real-life declining health perfectly cast him into this role as an alcoholic college professor continually depressed after the death of his wife. To support his two precocious children, he teaches
and becomes a night watchman. The children plan to have their father earn back
his self-respect; they create a situation in which their father's lone vote will decide who the town's next mayor will be. So once again the father becomes an important man, not only to himself, but also to his children.
