The Great Hope: Review

An Italian submarine cruising the Atlantic shortly before the end of WW II picks up some survivors of a British shipwreck. Among the survivors is nurse Maxwell, who becomes romantically involved with the submarine captain. Based on a true story, this film gives a nice pacifist message that, happily, does not come across as trite or heavy-handed. The ensemble acting is underplayed and never hammy, and the episodic story is held together well by the direction. leave a comment
