Great Expectations: Review

Uninspired Hollywood version of the Charles Dickens classic starring Holmes as Pip, the young orphan boy who rises to prominence with the help of his life-long mysterious benefactor. A weak adaptation filled with disappointing performances from a cast capable of better. Valerie Hobson shone much brighter as Estella in the vastly superior 1946 version directed by David Lean. At the time of initial release, the picture suffered from critical comparison with the nearly simultaneous release of THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP, the first of a series of British productions of the works of Dickens. Look quickly for Walter Brennan in a small role as a prisoner. leave a comment
