One summer morning in 1958, magazine art director Art Kane invited several dozen musical friends to pose for a group photograph on a sidewalk in Harlem. Those present happened to be some of the biggest legends in American jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Marian McPartland, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young.
