Shot in Spain, London, New York, Rome, and Rio de Janeiro, this exciting suspense picture had several titles. In Italy, it was known as AD OGNI COSTO. In Germany it was TOP JOB, and in Spain it was DIAMANTES A GO-GO. All four versions were of different lengths, no surprise since the film was one of those co-production deals that involves companies from various countries and stars from various countries that will guarantee an audience in each venue. Robinson is a teacher in Rio. Twice each year he's looked out of his classroom window and seen a huge cache of gems delivered to a diamond company across the way. After three decades of toiling in the groves of academe he goes to New York and asks Celi, an old pal, to help him rob the jewels. Celi assembles a cadre of crooks, Kinski, Rigaud, Cucciolla, and Hoffman, to aid in the theft. So with a safecracker, an electronics wizard, a professional gigolo (to seduce the manager's secretary) and a leader, they return to Rio to do the deed. It's the day before Carnival in Brazil, and the gang learns that a new security system, known as the Grand Slam 70, has been installed in the strongroom. They regroup and make a new plan, but Leigh, the secretary, smells something unkosher and calls in the police. The gang begins bickering, and the plan is altered. Cut to Rome, where Leigh meets Robinson and is about to hand over the gems (it was a double cross all the way) when a young purse snatcher goes by on a motorbike, takes Leigh's handbag, and disappears down the street. Good acting and direction, and more than a little nod of appreciation to several movies which have used similar plots like TOPKAPI, RIFIFI, and Kubrick's THE KILLING, which also had a twist ending. A good movie that deserved a better fate than it got at the box office. leave a comment
