Tamba steals some gold to pay off an oppressive government tax, then brutally murders a group of fishermen who were witness to the theft. Both acts are violations of ancient samurai codes and Tamba's brother-in-law Nakadai denounces the actions. Tamba expels Nakadai from the family, but
Nakadai joins up with a shogunite to seek revenge. They watch as Tamba moves some beacon lights in order to wreck a ship, and the two former family members engage in a swordfight. Tamba is the loser and Nakadai's honor remains intact. Typical samurai stuff.
