The eccentric Austrian-born artist Gottfried Helnwein might be best known to Middle America for his pop art tableaux, such as his Boulevard of Broken Dreams, a riff on Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. That sort of kitschy iconography isn’t typical for Helnwein, however; he has spent the majority of his career obsessed with painting and photographing children.
