Bergman stars as a beautiful Parisian interior decorator approaching middle age whose lover, Montand, has a penchant for younger women. Fearing loneliness and sensing that Montand will never marry her, she finds herself irresistibly attracted to Perkins, the son of one of her wealthy
clients, American socialite Landis. This sparks jealous spats between Montand and Bergman, and he is outraged upon his return from a business trip to find that Perkins has moved in with her. Montand seeks solace in the company of a string of other women, but he cannot forget Bergman. Meanwhile,
Bergman begins to realize that she does not really love Perkins and has just been using him to feel loved and needed. Montand finally proposes to Bergman and she accepts, but soon after they are married, the cycle starts again and Bergman finds out that Montand is continuing his affairs. Powerful
performances by the three principal stars turned this depressing script into a fine examination of middle-aged romance.
