A charming, ingenuous comedy from Israel, which is not known for producing lighthearted fare. Julie Hagerty sells insurance policies to support herself and her ne'er-do-well husband, Goutman. One afternoon Hagerty returns home to find Goutman having his way with another woman, so, fed up, she buys an airline ticket to a place she's always wanted to see, Paris. On the plane Hagerty tries to sleep, so she takes some sleeping pills, but the pills do their job too well, and she wakes up in Israel, the stop after Paris, without luggage and without money. She meets Kollek, a history teacher who is on reserve with the army, making it difficult for him to take a regular teaching assignment. To make ends meet he is driving a cab. Kolleck takes Hagerty to a kibbutz where she can live, eat, and work. She has no idea what a kibbutz is and what she is supposed to do, but she learns quickly, trying to lose the nickname they've given her: the American Queen. Kolleck also produced, directed, and wrote this funny, racy, and satirical film. leave a comment
