This rite-of-passage childhood drama stars Brandon de Wilde as Skeeter, a 14-year-old orphan living in the Mississippi swamps with his elderly uncle (Walter Brennan). One day Skeeter finds a stray basenji and adopts her; after he has become attached to the animal, however, he discovers that the dog's original owner has posted a large reward for her return. Torn between his love for the dog and his conscience, which tells him to return her, Skeeter makes his first mature decision in bringing the dog back to her rightful owner. An appealing family film with some tender moments.
