Attempting to bridge the gap between comedy and drama, GOODBYE, MY FANCY accomplishes neither. Based on a play by Fay Kanin, it is the story of Crawford, an assertive congresswoman who returns to her alma mater to receive a degree. The irony is that she had been expelled from the school two decades previously, and she agrees to take the award mainly to rub the administrators' noses in her success. Her onetime lover, Young, is now president of the school, and she is looking forward to seeing him again. In fact, Crawford's expulsion was her punishment after an all-night escapade with Young when he was a fledgling professor and she was a student. She left the school in tears and has not seen him since. It should go without saying that sparks fly the moment they see each other again, but there's a problem in the form of Lovejoy, a journalist-photographer who has been trailing Crawford for quite some time, gathering material for a story. He is crazy in love with her and a triangle begins to form. Lovejoy wants to marry Crawford and does what he can to break up the budding re-romance between her and Young. Meanwhile, in a subplot, Farley is a professor at the school who feels that the college is mired in old-fashioned ways. He wants to bring it up-to-date, instead of allowing it to continue using outdated teaching systems. St. John and Tuttle, trustees of the school, are rock-ribbed conservatives and totally against any alterations in the curriculum. Crawford joins Farley in his crusade and, after several complications arise, sees that Young is wishy-washy and that she would be much happier with Lovejoy. She bids farewell to Young as the picture ends. It was not a hit on Broadway and failed at the movie box office as well. There are not enough laughs in the Goff-Roberts screenplay to make us feel lighthearted and there is far too much preachiness to take it seriously. Mostly worth watching for Lovejoy's performance. leave a comment
