Another ponderous Australian production that squanders its resources on an obsession with period detail while leaving the plot and characters bereft of anything resembling personality or motivation. Set in the small town of Corrimandel in 1939, THE GOOD WIFE focuses on Marge (Rachel Ward), the dutiful spouse of rugged lumberjack Sonny Hills (Bryan Brown). Although her marriage is a happy one and Sonny is a good provider, he is a dud in bed. Living with them is Sonny's younger brother, Sugar (Steven Vidler), who inexplicably gets Sonny's permission to sleep with Marge. Unfortunately for Marge, Sugar is even worse than Sonny. Later a handsome stranger in town becomes the object of Marge's obsession. Made somewhat palatable by a strong performance from Ward, THE GOOD WIFE tries so hard to ooze a moody sense of sexual tension that it squeezes the life out of the material. Perhaps most annoying is the relationship between Brown and Vidler. Every scene they have together turns into a Three Stooges-type routine. Director Ken Cameron has no grasp of character and his film is so scrupulously decent that it takes no stance and, therefore, is without passion--a fatal flaw in a film about obsession and lust. leave a comment
