This is not one of Cooper's better performances. The normally brilliant McCarey presents an awkward story in a manner as bumbling and inept as its likable but uninspired hero. Cooper is the manager of a department store who just can't say no to a host of spongers and hangers-on. He lends his car to a neighbor who wrecks it and then further vexes his wife Sheridan by inviting the car repairman to dinner. Cooper next lends his life's savings, which Sheridan had been planning to use for a new house, to an impoverished young couple to begin a business. He also tolerantly feeds and houses Sheridan's loafing brother Ross, who refuses to look for a job. Then he gets entangled with Lorring, an abrasive salesgirl working for him, and prevents her suicide. Cooper eventually faces bankruptcy and ruin; he goes on a colossal binge to forget his troubles and wakes up vice president of the firm and with repayment from his friends. Cooper provides only a sheepish, befuddled look throughout this slapdash production and serves as a straight man to one-liners from undistinguished character actors. Only Sheridan comes through with a stellar performance. leave a comment
